TUK: The Unknown Knowns Exhibition Poster

The 125th anniversary of Stanley Park in 2013 provides a pivotal backdrop for reimagining the former polar bear pit as a contemporary sculpture venue. Rather than treating the anniversary as only a commemorative moment, it becomes an active catalyst for transformation: the celebrations are used to shift the pit’s identity from disused zoo infrastructure to an accessible public art site.

The transformation of the polar bear pit into a sculpture park, framed as the TUK project’s first official public event, brings together sculptors Marina Glynn and Ian Rhodes, whose distinct artistic voices respond to the history, scale, and atmosphere of the enclosure, to “open” the space to the public in a new way, using sculpture to reinterpret it as a place of reflection, curiosity, and cultural activity rather than confinement.
